Rethinking the workplace

Problems caused by the traditional working environment (continued)

Standardized offices & spaces: the two main working environments, closed offices or open spaces, usually have the same configuration whatever the activity of the company or the function of the employee and people work exclusively in one of the two systems.
No optimal utilization & loss of space: due to various absences (holidays, sickness, business travels, meetings,...) desks are left unoccupied for many days a year.
Poor attention to ergonomics and homeliness of office spaces: the common office equipment consists of a (non-adjustable) desk, a chair (adjustable in height) and a (fixed cable) computer. The quality of the environment is often rather poor, except maybe in the meeting rooms and executive rooms.
Environment is not adapted to the evolution in communication and information technology: employees work at a fixed place and within fixed schedules whereas information and contacts now originate from any place on earth, at any time of the day or night.
Diverse activities versus a single work style: employees tend to have tasks of a different nature combined within one global function, compared to the rather uniform activities and responsibilities of the past. One fixed working space can hardly be suitable for each and every one of these tasks.
